Guiding words

The subconscious mind is like the ocean, and a single wave is like the conscious mind.

The force of the ocean is behind every single wave and can be likened to the subconscious drive behind most of our daily actions, thoughts and emotions. At the most basic level, we are driven either by love or fear. Noticing what is behind your conscious mind is powerful.

The subconscious mind is mostly non-verbal, which means it senses, visualises and runs learned automatic patterns to make everyday life effortless. For example, mindlessly running through your usual morning routine, using the same old words to greet familiar people each day, or learnt body posture changes when you shift from being bored to thinking about something or someone that you love.

Words carry energy that is understood by your subconscious mind.

The words that you choose to listen to on the radio or television and in conversation penetrate your inner world. The books and stories you choose to read will subliminally shape your beliefs. The words that you choose to think and speak aloud influence your mindset and those around you. Each wave of information will well up and create momentum that ultimately moves your life in a particular direction. Words powerfully shape and colour your world. If you say that you want to “eat something good” versus “savouring something delicious”, there is a very different sensation and reaction in the body. Saliva will be released, cues of hunger aroused, and the digestive tract will start to grumble wantingly. Expressive words that contain sensory or feeling information are hypnotic. Choose your language with conscious care.

Selecting words that uplift and inspire you and the people around you will shift your mood and expand your experience of everyday life. Listen to the way your favourite writer, poet or singer uses language and take inspiration. Look for synonyms of the words you typically use to enrich your mind and your world. Add some sensory or visually descriptive words to really amp up the emotive nature of your inner and outer communication.

Amp it up using your five senses

The subconscious mind is activated by our senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, taste and internal sensations. It is also symbolic in nature, which means that it understands ideas without the use of words. Infants and children first learn to communicate and understand their world through their senses and the use of non-verbal communication. Gestures, posture, facial expression, tone, pitch, pace and other qualities make up the majority of non-verbal communication. We get extraordinary amounts of information from our five senses, and we can harness this to amplify our focus and keep us moving in the direction of our values and goals.

Surround your senses with stimulating images, scents, sounds, and textures to create an atmosphere for change. Shift your mood with music that will fill you with joy when you are doing tedious chores or build courage before that scary job interview. Dim the lights when you are ready for rest and relaxation. Fill your kitchen with warm spice smells like cinnamon and star anise to create the atmosphere for a romantic dinner or deep conversation with friends.

Embodiment and visualisation

You can harness the power of the subconscious ocean mind to drive your conscious thoughts, feelings and actions towards your master plan. The subconscious mind lives in the body and is fed by your imagination.

Become aware of old thoughts and body patterns. Practice small shifts in mindset by rehearsing self-expanding beliefs such as “I am sharp, clear and beautiful like a precious diamond, and I am ready to shine brightly”. Create a new identity for yourself this year, like “I am a writer/musician/artist”. Use your posture and facial expression, breath and movement to feel like this is the truth of your body. Believe it fully with all of your senses until you sense emotions that elevate you and bathe in them.

Take action to demonstrate to yourself that are stepping into the shoes of your new confidence, clarity and power in situations where you feel comfortable. Then challenge yourself in increasingly expanding life arenas. Show yourself what you are truly capable of. Revel in your newfound quintessence.

Try opening your posture and greet others with your new patterns of thought, feeling and action.  You will notice that their response feeds back to you like a ripple that contains the same energy you approached them with. This will reinforce the vision that you have for yourself and will eventually become second nature to you.

You can use your imagination to materialise your dreams.  Vividly imagine the thing you want to achieve and feel the emotions you would feel if you had already achieved that dream.  Gratitude is an elevated emotion and has powerful effects when activating the images in your mind.

What energy do you want to carry with you each day, in every situation and in all of your relationships?

Map out your year with intention.

Now is your time to have some fun dreaming up the adventures of the next twelve months. Allow time to contemplate each guiding question below.

Setting intentions towards medium-term dreams helps you gather momentum and inspiration for the small steps you take every day. It is helpful to have a guiding set of values to keep you on course. Values are the qualities that you live by and what is most important to you.

Use your GUIDING WORDS or SYMBOLS to remind you how to be in the world, with others and most importantly, how you communicate and behave towards yourself each day. They will keep you moving towards what you want to achieve and keep you living in line with your true self.

The right words will ignite you from the inside.

  • Take your time to contemplate what words or symbols empower and inspire you. Close your eyes and let the words come to you.
  • Find synonyms or images online that are descriptive and symbolic.
  • Think of different areas of your life like relationships, passions, career, health, self-care.
  • Write or draw them in your journal and display them in a prominent space to remind you daily.

Small habit changes every day will have massive effects over time.

Now ask yourself these questions:

How do each of your value words or symbols make you feel?

How can you remember to keep your values in the front of your mind even through the rough seas?

If you lived your values fully every day, how would you walk, speak and move differently through your world? How would you act as the person you want to be?

What are you looking forward to in the next 12 months?

What is holding you back right now?

What lessons from last year do you wish to take into the next 12 months? (Check what you wrote on previous pages)

What parts of YOUR LIFE do you want to work on this year?

What parts of YOUR SELF do you want to nurture this year?

The idea of crossing oceans may overwhelm the fear-driven mind, but the love-driven mind is certain, courageous and limitless.
