The Power of Mindset and How to Change Yours

Power of mindset

Mindsets are your collection of mental frames or lenses.  They shape your thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours. How you perceive, react or respond to situations and recall the memory of those events is filtered by your own set of carefully curated mindsets.  An example of mindset is whether you see the glass as “half full” or “half empty.”    It is something that develops over time and is shaped by our life experiences and the people around us. You often don’t realise that you are looking through the frame of a particular mindset until you are forced to take a different perspective.

Three helpful mindsets:

  • Abundance Mindset
  • Love Mindset
  • Growth Mindset

Abundance Mindset vs. Scarcity Mindset
An abundance mindset assumes that there is enough for all. The scarcity mentality believes that resources, opportunities and space are limited. The problem with scarcity mentality is that you get defensive or offensive and compete with others with the same interest rather than building bridges and creating a stronger community with more opportunities.

Love Mindset vs. Fear Mindset
Holding a fear-based mindset is like having a filter on your mind that shuts out anything positive and loving in the world and absorbs all of the negativity. If you watch the nightly news, you will see the fear-based mindset they cling to. If you watch this fear-fest daily, you will also begin to see only tragedy in the world and hold onto fear and mistrust. If you have a love mindset, you will see the innate good in others. Even when people are not showing love, you understand that they need love more than they may realise themselves.

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset
If you have a fixed mindset, you think success is due to inborn ability rather than learning and practice.  You think people are naturally talented at something or not.  A growth mindset is a learning mindset.  You hold the belief that you can improve at anything with the proper training.

How To Change Your Mindset

  1. Ask yourself a better set of questions.   Ask yourself how you can make the most of a situation, what this has taught you, or how can you thrive instead of survive is a going to breed more inspiration and empowerment than asking yourself “why me?” or  “what’s the use in trying?”
  2. Adopt a helpful set of assumptions.  Rather than assuming there’s not enough, assume there’s an infinite amount, and you need to find it.  Test your assumptions by trying on a different way of thinking to help you find different conclusions you might not have otherwise discovered.
  3. Adopt a new set of metaphors.  For example, rather than seeing life as an uphill struggle, you could see life as an obstacle course full of adventures and challenges.
