“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” – Buddha
You Become What You Practice
Imagine your habits as seeds. Whatever you plant and nurture grows into the garden of your life. Keep watering the same seeds, and soon they’ll take over. But here’s the kicker—you get to choose what’s in your garden. Fear, anger, courage, calm, compassion, love, complaining… what will you grow?
I remember watching a Youtube video of an adorable young man, Prem, who made me stop in my tracks and think about this idea of what we practice daily. I have since shown this clip to so many of my psychology clients. I wrote in massive words on my whiteboard “What do you practice?” to remind me every morning to practice elevated emotions and this transformed me. Check out the very wise Prem here:

Practicing Fear
If you plant seeds of fear, you’ll grow a garden full of weeds. Fear will creep into everything, choking out your joy and confidence. You’ll see shadows where there’s sunlight and hear danger in the rustling of leaves.
But fear doesn’t need to rule your garden—you can stop watering it anytime.
Practicing Anger
Anger seeds are like thorny vines. They feel strong and powerful at first, but they’re prickly, hard to control, and end up hurting you more than anyone else. Sure, anger has its moments, but if it overtakes your garden, it can make everything feel hostile and harsh.
Is that what you want blooming around you?
Practicing Complaining
Complaining is like planting weeds and then getting mad that your garden isn’t flourishing. The more you focus on what’s wrong, the less space you leave for anything good to grow. Complaining spreads fast, like dandelions after a windy day, and before you know it, your whole garden is overrun.
The occasional vent? Totally fine. But constant complaints? That’s a garden no one—including you—wants to spend time in.
Practicing Courage
Courage is like planting wildflowers. It might take some effort at first, but eventually, you’ll have a vibrant, colourful patch that draws people in and makes you smile. Practicing courage helps you step out of your comfort zone and do hard things, even when you’re a little scared.
Practicing Calm and Love
Calm is like planting soothing greenery—think soft moss, gentle ferns, and shady trees. It creates a space where you can breathe deeply and let go of life’s chaos.
Love, on the other hand, is like planting a row of sunflowers. It radiates warmth, grows toward the light, and brightens the entire garden.
Practicing Compassion and Self-Love
Compassion is the rich, fertile soil that makes everything grow better. It’s the understanding that we’re all human, all imperfect, and all deserving of kindness—yourself included.
Self-love is the water and sunlight. Without it, nothing flourishes. It’s not selfish; it’s essential for growth. When you practice self-love, you give your garden the nourishment it needs to thrive.

The thoughts you repeatedly think become beliefs, and those beliefs drive your behaviour. A well-tended mind garden fosters resilience, confidence, and creativity, empowering you to make better choices and overcome challenges.
Tending to your mind garden isn’t just a metaphor; it’s a vital practice for shaping the life you want and becoming the best version of yourself. Regular care ensures you’re cultivating a space where courage, love, and growth can truly thrive.
A thriving mind garden doesn’t just benefit you; it also affects those around you. When you radiate calm, compassion, and positivity, you inspire others to do the same, creating a supportive and uplifting environment.
A neglected mind can lead to stress, burnout, and even physical health issues. Caring for your mental garden—through practices like mindfulness, gratitude, and self-love—creates a foundation of inner peace that benefits your well-being.
So, What Will You Plant in your Mind Garden?
Fear, anger, complaining, courage, calm, love, compassion—whatever seeds you choose to water will grow into your reality.
Ask yourself:
- Do you want a tangled, prickly mess of fear and complaints?
- Or a lush, vibrant garden full of courage, calm, and love?
The beautiful thing is, you can start planting differently today. Pull a few weeds, sow some new seeds, and watch your life transform.
Share your thoughts and ideas with me. I would love to hear what you plant and practice each day to improve your mind garden.
